Women and young people are still on the sidelines when it comes to leadership in Italian companies.

On boards of directors, women account for an average of 19% of members, while younger generations make up only 15% of the membership. This figure confirms not only how limited access to decision-making roles still is, but also how the system is evolving.

Less obvious but crucial dynamics are emerging that are key to understanding this change:

  • In family-owned businesses, Gen X finds itself “squeezed” between Baby Boomers and Millennials, with distinct generational dynamics
  • In companies controlled by private equity firms, Millennials have more opportunities than the average
  • At the regional level, some regions in Southern Italy show higher levels of inclusion, defying long-held expectations.

A multi-speed system, then, in which tradition and transformation coexist and reshape leadership models.
